Fundraising for Hospice of the Valleys

Every year the Hospice of the Valleys cares for around 500 patients suffering from cancer or other life-limiting illnesses. The families of these patients also need the love, care and support to help them in the difficult and often exhausting task of looking after a sick relative.
The hospice makes no charge whatsoever for the service that we provide, but the specialist palliative care that we offer does not come cheaply.
Last year, the Hospice of the Valleys cost almost £1 million to run - that’s almost £18,000 every week - and we receive around a third of this in government and local health board funding and from charitable trusts. The rest has to be raised from the generous community of Blaenau Gwent – people like you – and we employ two fundraisers Helen Morgan and Kevin Davidge who organise events and come up with ideas for sustainable funding for the hospice.

Residents of this county borough have always been hugely supportive of the Hospice of the Valleys and their generosity in giving both money and time never ceases to impress us.
We are all so grateful that you continue to support this vital service by supporting our charity shops and fundraising events and by making regular donations and legacies.
Not a week goes past without somebody in the community holding some kind of fund-raising event for us, whether it is a concert, a darts evening, a sponsored walk or a tea dance.
Without your continued support there would undoubtedly be no Hospice of the Valleys – no one to care for the patients and families whose lives have been thrown into turmoil by life-threatening illness. By helping us, you help bring a ray of sunshine back into those patients’ lives.
Regular events –
April – Lap the Lake – three mile sponsored fun run around Bryn Bach Park lake in Tredegar. Also, a 10K race takes place on the same day. Raises around £10,000 annually for the hospice.
August – Three Peaks Challenge - Sponsored mountain climb. Raised £7,000 in its first year.
November – we are a regular fixture at Tredegar Round Table’s annual firework display, providing tea, coffee and soup to keep spectators warm.
December – annual Light up a Life appeal starts. We remember departed loves ones by sponsoring lights on the hospice tree at Festival Park in Ebbw Vale and entering memories in a special book. Also on the first Sunday of December we have a Winter Wonderland at Bryn Bach Park and a Santa Run will take place for the first time in 2009.
